Worry Doll

2021

Embroidered linen, toy stuffing

I began drawing and then embroidering figures, both pregnant and not, as a way of processing how I felt in my postpartum body, and how I felt about my changing body before I gave birth. As soon as I started embroidering this pregnant figure, I knew she needed some form. Rather than staying flat she has become 3D, a doll of sorts.

When I was a child, I bought a set of ‘Worry Dolls’ in a museum gift shop. I loved the idea of these little people that I could share my thoughts and fears with, and that they might absolve me of them. I thought of them a lot whilst creating during this time, and she became my version of a worry doll.
